“The Father” is a story about John Purcell and the unsteady relationship he has with his son, Johnny Purcell. Johnny had a boy scout meeting which he was supposed to attend with his father but did not want to ask him because they weren’t that close. Eventually John found out and went with his son to the banquet. He was very worried about the perception of the other fathers would have of him. At the banquet, he realized that he knew less about his son than most of the other people that were there. He knew he was missing out on his son’s life. Stressed out, he decided to try and take the edge off when he found another father that was uncomfortable in that situation and went for a drink with him. The drinking got out of control and when John went back inside he embarrassed himself in front of everyone. His son was so outraged that he never wanted to see him again. John knew that he had just lost his son forever.
